Nikola Popovski
He was born on May 24, 1962 in Skopje.
He completed primary and secondary education in Skopje, and graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Skopje. He received his MA degree at the same faculty, on the thesis "Economic Grounds of Information Society".
In the period 1986-1990 he worked in the Ministry of Development and in the Cabinet of the President of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. In the same period, he was a member of the Assembly of the City of Skopje. In 1992 he was elected MP in the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia. He chaired the following parliamentary committees:
- Foreign Policy Committee (1992-1994);
- Environment, Youth and Sports Committee (1995-1998); and
- Financing and Budget Committee (1998-2002).
In the period 1998-2002 he was acting as coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of SDSM.
From 1993 to 2002 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and a head of the Macedonian delegation for two subsequent terms of office. He was a member in a number of committees in the Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
In October 2002 he was elected President of the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia, in that capacity until November 2003.
He is an author of professional articles published in domestic and international magazines. He also published two books in the field of economics and politics.
He is fluent in English.
He was elected Minister of Finance on November 7, 2003.
